Barcelona-based lighting company Marset has reimagined the lighting pendant with Pleat Box. Pleat Box is the sophisticated combination of a digitally designed crease in a piece of cloth and flawlessly handcrafted ceramics. Though it has the appearance of draped fabric, the pendant is sculptural in nature and its design highlights the dichotomy between appearance and composition. Pleat Box generates an extremely warm and beautiful light that illuminates spaces wonderfully by creating an inviting atmosphere.
Pleat Box is the result of the first-ever collaboration between Xavier Mañosa, a master ceramicist from Barcelona, and the Mashallah design studio in Berlin with Marset. The technical artisans behind Mashallah, Hande Akçayli and Murat Koçyigit, digitally rendered the gesture of creased cloth using 3D computer models, which was then cast in ceramic by Mañosa at his workshop. Exterior and interior colors are added to the pendant lamp after the ceramic mold is fired in a kiln and the initial processes are completed. The final result is a spectacularly modern lighting fixture that is a work of art in its own right.
The Pleat Box exterior is offered in white, terracotta, brown, black and grey ceramic; the interior finishes are available in brilliant white enamel or glittering gold, each designed to change the way light is seen.
